BMW Capitalizes on Luxury Sedan Market as Competitors Exit: 7 Series Positioned for Growth

The Bavarian automaker remains committed to the premium four-door segment while rivals such as Audi and Lexus retreat to focus on high-end sport utility vehicles.

Premium buyers increasingly opt for luxury SUVs over traditional executive sedans, yet BMW refuses to abandon the full-size sedan category. Following the introduction of the refreshed 7 Series, Motor1 engaged with Max Hubert, product manager for the model and an ardent proponent of the executive sedan format.

Strategic Opportunity in a Shrinking Market

When asked about competitors withdrawing from the segment, Hubert expressed optimism about BMW's positioning:

"Some competitors [have left] the market, but that's just an opportunity for us to grow. Last year, we were the most successful luxury sedan. So we really see a fit… [The 7 Series] is very successful, and it shows that it can also be successful in the future."

Recent industry developments have seen Audi discontinue the A8 and Lexus retire the LS, with both manufacturers shifting their strategic focus toward three-row luxury sport utility vehicles. Conversely, BMW and Mercedes-Benz have doubled down on the segment, each unveiling substantially upgraded versions of their flagship sedans.

The 2027 7 Series: Evolution and Enhancement

The latest iteration of the 7 Series builds upon its predecessor through refined exterior styling, a comprehensively redesigned cabin, and comprehensive performance improvements throughout. The fully electric i7 variant receives an enhanced driving range, while conventional gasoline-powered models benefit from performance optimizations.

Pricing Structure for 2027

  • 2027 BMW 7 Series RWD: Starting at $101,350
  • 2027 BMW 7 Series xDrive: Starting at $104,350
  • i7 50 xDrive: Starting at $107,750
  • i7 60 xDrive: Starting at $126,250

The manufacturer intends to introduce supplementary variants, including a plug-in hybrid option, to the roster during the remainder of the year.

Market Outlook

BMW's steadfast dedication to the 7 Series, paired with Mercedes-Benz's ongoing commitment to the S-Class, suggests the full-size luxury sedan sector retains vitality. Industry observers indicate this segment may sustain competitive viability for an extended period despite the prevailing market shift toward sport utility vehicles.
