Arsenal Eyes Historic Double as Champions League Semifinal Victory Reignites Title Hopes

The Gunners secured a commanding 2-1 comeback victory over Lyon in the Women's Champions League semifinal first leg, positioning themselves within touching distance of a second consecutive final appearance while simultaneously closing the gap in the domestic title race.

Arsenal's resurgence came at a crucial juncture in their 2025-26 campaign. Just 24 hours after Manchester City's unexpected loss to Brighton had reopened the Women's Super League title race, Renee Slegers' squad demonstrated their championship mettle by overturning an early deficit against Lyon at Emirates Stadium, where 26,758 spectators witnessed a dramatic second-half transformation.

Dominant Second-Half Display

The match began poorly for Arsenal, with Lyon's Jule Brand capitalizing on space afforded by captain Leah Williamson to give the visitors an early lead. However, the home side emerged from the interval as a different proposition entirely.

"The first half was quite even - we gave away a cheap goal," Williamson reflected. "But what you saw second half was a team on a mission, fuelled by the crowd."

Slegers implemented tactical adjustments at the interval, notably increasing the intensity of Arsenal's press. The strategy proved devastatingly effective. Lyon crumbled under sustained pressure in the north London sunshine, with the French club unable to muster a single shot on target as Olivia Smith, Caitlin Foord, and Stina Blackstenius terrorized their backline.

Mistakes Prove Costly

Both of Arsenal's goals resulted from Lyon defensive errors under pressure. Goalkeeper Christiane Endler's fumble on a Mariona Caldentey free-kick enabled Ingrid Engen to bundle the ball over the line, while Smith capitalized on a mix-up between Engen and Endler to seal the comeback with minutes remaining.

Former England defender Anita Asante praised Arsenal's control: "The second-half display was that of European champions - they stifled Lyon. They were really deserving of the win and of overturning that record of never beating Lyon in London."

Slegers dismissed suggestions her side had been fortunate, emphasizing the deliberate nature of her team's set-piece strategy against Lyon's physical dominance. "Sometimes you score the most brilliant goals - but you score all sort of goals in football," she noted.

Title Race Still Alive

The victory provides Arsenal with momentum heading into their domestic fixtures. A win against bottom-placed Leicester City on Wednesday would leave them eight points behind Manchester City with four matches remaining, having played two games fewer than their rivals.

"It's good for the league that it stays exciting until the very end," Slegers said. "We want to keep on pressing Man City for as long as it is possible."

With a one-goal advantage secured for the second leg in France, Arsenal now faces the prospect of a thrilling climax to their season. Striker Alessia Russo summed up the sentiment: "I thought the momentum we came out of the second half with was massive and hopefully we can take it into the next few games."
