Square Peg, the production banner founded by Lars Knudsen and Ari Aster, is bringing back its filmmaker mentorship initiative, Square Peg Social. The second edition will take place in Austin Sept. 17-21.

The intimate five-day gathering brings together a curated group of emerging filmmakers alongside established directors, producers, and industry leaders. Square Peg Social is designed “to spark mentorship, creative exchange, and lasting collaboration, creating space for filmmakers at every stage, from students and first-time directors to more established voices developing new work.”

Alumni of its inaugural year have “secured representation with top agents and managers, moved projects into active production, and received recognition at the highest levels, including nominations and wins at the Academy Awards,” Square Peg said. It also highlighted “the creation of a tight-knit creative community grounded in mutual support and artistic risk-taking.”

Said WME’s Roger Green: “There are very few programs set up for emerging filmmakers and producers to gain insight into how to advance their careers from industry professionals. There are even fewer that give these filmmakers a chance to have intimate, in-depth conversations with established filmmakers, producers, and talent representatives. Square Peg Social does all of this and more.”

He added: “Young filmmakers and producers typically don’t have a peer community. Square Peg Social gives them exactly that. Over the course of the program, I saw these filmmakers and producers bond and form lasting relationships where they can share stories, ask questions, and feel inspired by each other’s successes. This is so important, as it is incredibly isolating being an emerging artist in today’s entertainment business. I was particularly impressed with the inclusion of producers, who have even fewer programs built for them.”

Said producer Sara Murphy, an Oscar winner for One Battle After Another: “Square Peg Social was one of the more pleasurable and educational film experiences I’ve had. It’s a space where you are comfortable to ask questions and tell stories, and where we all get to learn and participate in how to better our film community.”

Produced by the Square Peg team, the initiative reflects the company’s commitment to “championing distinctive voices and strengthening the independent film ecosystem” through access, mentorship and community building. Submissions for the second edition of Square Peg Social are now open via FilmFreeway.
