Apple Wallet digital ID support expands to new state

Apple Wallet driver’s license support is expanding to a new state. Starting today, Arkansas residents can add their driver’s license to the Apple Wallet app on iPhone and Apple Watch.

Apple Wallet ID support comes to Arkansas

Apple previously touted Arkansas as one of the states planning to support Apple Wallet driver’s licenses and state IDs. The state launched Google Wallet and Samsung Wallet support last year, and now it’s making good on its Apple Wallet promise as well.

Arkansas announced the Apple Wallet rollout on its Department of Finance and Administration website today. The feature doesn’t appear to be live in the Apple Wallet app just yet, but we expect it to begin rolling out within the next couple of hours.

With the addition of Arkansas, Apple Wallet driver’s license support is now available in the following places:

  • Arizona
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Georgia
  • Hawaii
  • Illinois
  • Iowa
  • Maryland
  • Montana
  • New Mexico
  • North Dakota
  • Ohio
  • Puerto Rico
  • West Virginia

You can add your driver’s license or state ID to Apple Wallet by tapping the “+” button in the upper-right corner of the app. Apple Wallet will then guide you through adding the ID and verifying your identity.

You can then use your digital driver’s license at TSA checkpoints, as well as at select businesses and organizations in person, in app, and online. It does not replace your physical license.

The state of Arkansas says:

“ID in Apple Wallet does not replace your physical driver’s license or identification card and you must continue to carry your physical card. ID in Apple Wallet is voluntary and serves as an easy, private, and secure companion to your physical, plastic driver’s license/identification card.”

Apple Wallet support for IDs expanding to additional states isn’t quite as notable as it used to be. Last year, Apple rolled out a new Digital ID feature last year powered by your US passport. This means anyone with a passport can create a Digital ID in Apple Wallet, regardless of whether their state supports the feature.

We’ll keep an eye out to monitor when Apple Wallet’s driver’s license feature officially rolls out in Arkansas.
