Apple releases GarageBand update, here’s what’s new
Apple has released a new version of GarageBand for Mac. The new version finally includes an app icon optimized for macOS Tahoe.
GarageBand now includes a macOS Tahoe app icon
Apple released macOS Tahoe to the public on September 15, 2025, over 200 days ago, so it’s great to see GarageBand finally receive the love it deserves.
As part of macOS 26, Apple forced all app icons to use the same rounded rectangle shape as iOS and iPadOS apps. Icons that don’t conform are squished down into a round-rect with a gray background.
While the new icon no longer has the gray compatibility box on macOS Tahoe, the actual app itself is still designed for macOS 15.

The release notes for GarageBand version 10.4.14 only mention stability improvements and bug fixes. The new app update also increases the minimum macOS version from macOS 14.4 to macOS 15.6, according to @aaronp613.
GarageBand changes
After releasing the update through the App Store, Apple has also published detailed release notes for the new version:
Accessibility
- The Input pop-up menu in Smart Controls is now accessible using VoiceOver.
Apple Loops
- In the Loop Browser, Apple Loops now preview correctly in the key signature of the song.
Sharing
- When sharing a song to GarageBand for iOS, the destination now defaults to the GarageBand for iOS folder in iCloud.
General
- The overall file size of saved GarageBand songs has been reduced.
- The Pedalboard no longer shifts position when the View size is changed.
- Pasting a copied region to a locked track no longer unexpectedly populates it in an unassociated Piano Roll editor.
Creator Studio with Logic Pro is Apple’s focus
While GarageBand is still around as a free app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac, Apple’s focus lately has shifted toward the paid app suite with Creator Studio. Earlier this month, Apple released new versions of Logic for iPad and Mac.
Apple Creator Studio with Logic included is available for $12.99/month or $129/year after a free trial.
GarageBand is available for free on the App Store.
