Amazon's upcoming live-action Voltron movie starring Henry Cavill will not get a theatrical run

Unfortunately, it looks like the upcoming Voltron live-action remake starring Henry Cavill will not see the big screen, as Amazon confirms the movie will go straight to streaming.

Amazon MGM Studios broke the news during its slate presentation at Amazon Upfront (H/T Discussing Film), confirming that the Voltron movie will skip a theatrical release and debut straight on streaming, either on Prime Video or add-on channel MGM+. The movie is set to adapt the 1984 animated series, Voltron: Defender of the Universe.

This is just the latest setback the project has faced after a series of delays. The movie has technically been in development since 2005, when The Mark Gordon Company announced plans to adapt the franchise. However, over the years, the idea floated around many studios, including New Regency and Universal Pictures, until 2022, when Amazon MGM Studios entered negotiations with Hasbro for the rights, which were granted in early 2026.

It seems as though fans are not too happy with the news and are taking the project's streaming release as a bad sign. One fan said on Twitter, "Is it that bad that they have to cancel theatrical release? Because a movie like this would have sold tickets," and another added, "Not every blockbuster needs theaters, but giant robots fighting in space definitely feels like one that does." On the other hand, some prospective viewers are excited to watch the ne movie in the comfort of their own homes, as one said, "Love the hell out of this. Going to theaters is in the past for me."

The Voltron movie, directed by Red Notice’s Rawson Marshall Thurber, will follow a group of pilots who command five robot lions that fit together to create super robot Voltron. After being transported from Earth to Princess Allura's planet Arus, they use the machinery to fight Warlord King Zarkon, Haggar, and monsters called Robeasts.

Alongside Cavill, the cast also includes Daniel Quinn-Toye, Sterling K. Brown, Rita Ora, John Harlan Kim, Alba Baptista, Samson Kayo, Tharanya Tharan, Laura Gordon, Tim Griffin, Nathan Jones. Witcher star Cavill will reportedly play warrior King Alfur, and Brown will play his nemesis and the movie's primary villain, Zarkon.
