A new report from Parens states that US fast chargers were installed in the US at a healthy rate of over 3,000 in the first quarter of 2026, saying, “Deployment remains elevated, with ~3,300 new ports added in Q1, in line with seasonal patterns. Utilization held at ~15.6%, only slightly below Q4, suggesting new capacity is being absorbed without overbuild—extending the supply-demand balance seen in 2025.”

If you have been following EV charging news, you know there have been quite a few stories about EV chargers getting faster and faster, particularly the ones in China and Chinese EV chargers installed in Europe.

In the US, there is also a trend to installing faster EV chargers, though not as fast as the typical Chinese ones, per Parens: “Operators are prioritizing throughput over footprint, with fewer stations delivering more ports per site. High-power charging (250+ kW) dominates new installs, while site design is converging toward more standardized, economically efficient models.”

Most of the news about EVs covers the vehicles themselves because they are generally more interesting than chargers. Many people may have little to no interest in public chargers because they are just electricity distributors. However, against a backdrop of news about increasing gas prices, slumping vehicle sales, corrupt politics and a dumb war, new EV chargers have quietly been installed at a steady rate.

In fact, when there are more EV chargers installed in public places where they are easily accessed, there is less range anxiety, which is a primary barrier to EV adoption. In particular, when there are more fast public chargers along interstates and highways, long-distance travel is better supported and some people have reported they like driving an EV over long distances more than a gas or diesel vehicle.

With fast chargers, EV drivers can sometimes charge from about 10 to 80% in less time than it takes to have a biobreak, take a stroll, sit and relax, have a bite, and so on.  There are also more chargers at hotels and motels these days and most EV charging happens at home, which is more convenient.

Installing more public chargers is one of the most important ways to support greater EV adoption and there have been far more EV chargers installed in the last year despite some politicians trying to block them.

Many of the new chargers in the US have been installed or are planned for mainstream retail outlets such as Wal-mart, WaWa, Shoprite, Kroger, Love’s Travel Centers, etc.
